When Edwin Payne stumbled upon the Gray Realm, she took an instant shine on the young ghost, seeing him as a potential agent that she could use to cause others to feel regret, shame, and hopelessness. Sending him back to Hell to confront his killer, Despair told Payne that she would call for him when he was needed.
