Dying from infected wounds sustained by a brutal assault, The Spirit of Charles Rowland was met by Death of the Endless. Initially agreeing to go with her, he protested once he learned that his new friend and saviour, Edwin Paine, would not be going with them. Unwilling to argue with the stubborn boy, Death allowed Rowland to remain, promising to return for him once she had finished rounding up the spirits released from Hell during Lucifer's abdication.
Not wishing to sit around and remain in St. Hilarion's School for Boys waiting for Death, he persuaded Paine to join him on his exploration of the world. The pair left hand in hand, excited to see what their new life held for them.
