Filled with chilling mists that cover all in sight, hundreds of mirrors hang suspended around the realm, connecting the worlds together; not just Earth, but also Hell. One can only leave by the mirror they enter, unless with the expressed permission of the realm's sovereign.
Edwin Payne stumbled into the Gray Realm quite accidentally, after investigating a mirror in the Doll House's Library. Falling through this portal, he came face to face with Despair, who took great pleasure in watching Edwin's killer, Simon, causing himself to bleed out by continuously tearing out pages from a spellbook. Disgusted by her assertions that he should gloat and revel in Simon's torment to make himself feel better, he is sent back to the Doll House, eager to prove her wrong and show that he can have and express compassion for others, even the one who had caused him to be banished to Hell all those years ago.
Back in the library, the mirror he left through cracked behind him, sealing the way off.
