When Edwin Payne, dragged back to Hell after his initial escape in 1990, stumbled upon him in his escape from the Entity in the Doll House, Simon initially believed him to be nothing more than part of his sentence.
Initially enraged to see his killer again, Edwin soon discovered the truth about Simon's enmity towards him; that he had loved him, and all his bullying was to get his attention. Although he had found it difficult, he forgave Simon for the ritual, believing that he did not deserve to be punishing himself so harshly for what was a stupid prank gone wrong. Payne also apologised to both of their living selves for allowing the fear and prejudices of their peers to dictate his emotions and actions and lamented that had he been able to overcome his nerves around his feelings for Simon and his burgeoning sexuality, he may have saved them both from this fate.
Racked with grief and remorse, he tearfully apologised to Payne for everything he had done, wishing him luck with his escape from Hell.
Shortly after Edwin left, Death of the Endless came for Simon and took him to his resting place. He could now rest in peace knowing that the boy he loved had forgiven him and did not hate him.
