The Spirit of Vincent Omata - DC Showcase: Death‎

Unaware that he was dead, Vincent's Spirit overheard a traffic accident outside. Going to investigate, he angrily yelled at two people accosting Death, threatening to call the police if they did not leave her alone. Exiting his apartment, he found the Endless waiting on the street. Thanking him for his help, although it was unnecessary, she asked if he could see his work, remembering him from the bar earlier that evening.

When asked why he had not finished any of his pieces, he sadly confessed his past trauma and mistakes, reasoning that all his creativity and passion for art had been destroyed. Death reassures him that while he may have lost his spark, he was a talented painter, proposing that she sit for him, just as he had asked of her when they met back at the bar.

As he worked, his fears of failure began to wash away, producing a painting that he considered perfect; capturing the love and joy for art he had once had.

However, his happiness turned to horror as he noticed for the first time that evening that the raindrops were suspended in midair. Time had stopped and they were locked in a single moment.

Noticing his corpse, he lamented that he had not accomplished much in life, save for the painting he had just completed. Yet as time began moving once more, he watched his apartment burn around him from the embers of a cigarette.

Vincent snapped at Death, demanding to know why she had tormented him in such a cruel fashion, however, the Endless replied that this was what was foretold in the Book of Destiny. Falling to his knees, he begged that she save the portrait, if nothing else, only to realise that she had already done it, even without him asking. Thanking her, his Spirit begins to morph and change, taking on the form of his younger self, when he was happy and full of joy.

He gladly took her hand and travelled together to his afterlife, leaving behind his inner demons and his finest creation.
