Vincent Omata - DC Showcase: Death‎

Vincent Omata was a failed painter from Gotham City who aspired to become a famous artist since childhood. He faced numerous hardships, including an abusive father - who eventually threw him out of the family home - and an art professor at Gotham University who constantly demeaned and humiliated him in front of the class.

After his girlfriend of six years, Charlotte, left him due to his ego, Vincent fell into a downward spiral of drugs and alcohol, allowing his inner demons to control his life. They would regularly manifest as fiery effigies of his past tormentors that only he could see and interact with. They were hard to ignore, often lashing out at them when he was with people, leading to misunderstandings and arguments.

Making ends meet as a painter and decorator, he was hired to paint the gates at Arkham Asylum, only to be fired due to taking too much time on it. Ever the perfectionist he wanted to do the job right, which annoyed his boss.

Going to Noonan’s Bar later that evening, he met with Death of the Endless. Striking up a conversation with her, Vincent found her to be a true puzzle and asked if he could paint her portrait. Seeing his distress, she gave him his hat, telling him that she would see him around.

Returning to his apartment, drunk and penniless Vincent sat alone, contemplating how he was going to pay his rent that month. Lighting up a cigarette, he began to smoke away his problems, only to die from an overdose of heroin at 8:56 on a cold rainy evening.

When firefighters recovered Vincent’s body, they were amazed to find that everything had been destroyed in the fire that burned through his apartment, save for a single painting of Death of the Endless.
