The subject of many horror films, Zombies - also known as The Walking Dead/Undead - were sentient beings reanimated in a shambling state, feasting on human brains to survive. With a keen sense of smell, they can use their heightened abilities to track down prey, so long as their brain is not concealed by magical enchantments. While most believe them to be mindless killing machines, Zombies maintain some of their intelligence and memories from their time alive, communicating with grunts and moans. However, these sounds are seldom understood by others outside their species. Unable to biologically reproduce, they can create new members of their kind by biting a host.
During his travels, Niles Caulder discovered that Zombies craved brains due to a rare biological enzyme produced. This compound, when ingested, could reverse the process, transforming them back into their original state and completely healing both internal and external injuries. Filmmakers took these findings and bastardised the facts, making them appear far more ferocious, violent, and destructive than they actually were.
While escaping from The Afterlife's Tunnel of Souls, the demonic Night Nurse puked on a group of five humans, covering them with a potent substance that caused their bodies to decay and die within twenty-four hours of getting back to the land of the living. The unofficial, bitter, and unwilling members of Caulder's Doom Patrol II were transformed into ravenous zombies, roaming the halls of Caulder's Mansion in search of the only living people left; Laura De Mille and Willoughby Kipling.
Manipulating the zombified team into following him, Kipling used them to fight Darren Jones and his army of Were-Butts, recovering Niles Caulder's severed head in the process. They would go on to feast on their dead mentor's brain, curing them once and for all, much to their disgust at what they had just done.
Although Kipling and The Doom Patrol had seemingly averted the threat, Darren Jones was bitten - either by Jane or Rita - during the skirmish, turning him into a Zombie as well.
Another Zombie, a Were-Butt, managed to survive the conflict as well. They were last seen six miles away from the town of Cloverton, Ohio, where the team were based.
