What You Taught Me - Transcripts

Part #1:

Batman: This new tech on the streets is dangerous and bears a striking resemblance to the weapons I use. If there's a leak on our side, I'll find it. I need you to figure out who's selling these weapons and shut them down. Can I count on the two of you? Luke? Lucius?

Narration: Lucius Fox: Creator of Bruce's Bat-Tech and Luke's father.

Lucius Fox: Absolutely.

Luke Fox: We got this.

Batman: Excellent. Keep me updated.

Luke Fox: Look, Dad--

Lucius Fox: We should get to it. I'll examine the tech Batman recovered. You should start running down any leads on the seller.

Luke Fox: Do you think we could maybe talk?

Lucius Fox: There's work to be done, Luke.

Luke Fox: Yeah, fine. Okay.

Sometime later

Lucius Fox: *Luke gets up to leave* Where are you going?

Luke Fox: I found a promising lead, going to check it out.

Lucius Fox: You? But I thought Batman...

Luke Fox: I'm Batwing, Dad. I can handle this. Batman wants me to handle this.

Lucius Fox: We should talk about this--

Luke Fox: Oh, now you want to talk?

Lucius Fox: There's no need for dramatics, Luke.

Luke Fox: I'm not the one being dramatic. How long are you going to punish me for not telling you that I'm Batwing?

Lucius Fox: You know what? Fine. You're an adult, Luke. You're allowed to do what you want. Including lie to your parents, apparently.

Luke Fox: You want to talk about lying? Remind me which one of us started working with Batman first? I don't remember you calling a family meeting to discuss that little piece of trivia.

Lucius Fox: That was different.

Luke Fox: How? How was it different?

Lucius Fox: It just was.

Luke Fox: I'm not a kid anymore, "because I said so" won't cut it. And will you look at me when we're talking?

Lucius Fox: What do you want me to say? That I'm overwhelmed with joy that you're throwing your life, your education, and all the opportunities I've given you away just so you can put on a mask and beat people up? You're smart enough to change the world. Instead, you're throwing yourself in front of bullets and putting targets on all of our backs so you can...what? Pretend at being Batman? Do you want me to pretend to be happy that I'm going to have to bury you before your time? Because that's what happens to Batman's sidekicks, Luke. They die. You wanted to know how I feel? Well, that's how I feel. Happy now?

----------------------------------

Part #2:

Luke Fox: Feel better?

Lucius Fox: No, not really.

Luke Fox: Are you finally ready to hear my side?

Lucius Fox: There's nothing you can say that will change my mind.

Luke Fox: What happened to us, Dad? We used to be so close. Now there's this...distance between us. I know you weren't happy when I deferred on those job offers after graduation, but now that you know it was to do this, I thought...

Lucius Fox: I support Batman's mission because I believe the people of Gotham deserve better than the hand they've been dealt. That doesn't mean I have to be happy about you putting on that suit. I sacrificed so much to give you every possible opportunity --- to have all the things I never did. And now I have to watch you throw it all away by putting your life in danger again and again and again.

Luke Fox: I do appreciate what you did for me. I appreciate you, Dad. Being Batwing isn't about the thrill. I know the work is dangerous, I know it's a risk. But Dad... You taught me to think for myself. To be independent. You taught me to help others, to not turn away when I saw others suffering. You taught me not to be afraid of my intelligence. My gifts. To never make myself lesser in a world that wanted me small. What was the point of teaching me all that if you weren't going to trust me to choose the right path for myself?

Lucius Fox: You could get hurt, Luke. You can't ask me to be happy about that.

Luke Fox: This is Gotham, I could be hurt walking down the street, just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. But when I put on the suit, maybe someone else gets to go home who wouldn't have. And that's why I won't give it up. Even if it makes you unhappy. Maybe I will get hurt. I can't promise that I won't. But if I can help, and I choose not to? Then I couldn't live with myself.

Lucius Fox: ... I don't like it. I'll never like it. But...maybe... I understand.

Luke Fox: That's all I'm asking.

Lucius Fox: And maybe... maybe I'm a little proud, too.

Luke Fox: Thanks, Dad.
