Light and Dark - Transcripts

Part One:

Robin: *tt* It is over. Grandfather should have known better than to send you.

Chase Butler: You think yourself so superior. You may wear a different crest now, but you will always be one of us.

Robin: Silence.

Chase Butler: You cannot wash your hands of what you did, you cannot wish away the past--

Robin: Silence!

Chase Butler: See? Even now, you show your true colours. You will always be an assassin first.

Batman: Robin! ... This is the last of them. Well done. We can take him in---

Robin: You do it. I will do another sweep--make sure we did not miss any.

Batman:  Hmm ...

----------------------------------
*Damian is throwing knives at the training dummy*

Bruce Wayne: Damian.

Damian Wayne: *startled, he throws the knife without thinking. Bruce catches it* Sorry.

Bruce Wayne: It's all right. Though it is unusual for you to let someone sneak up on you like that. Is everything okay?

Damian Wayne: I am fine.

Bruce Wayne: It was the assassin. What did he say to you?

Damian Wayne: Nothing that was not true.

Bruce Wayne: Do you want to talk about it?

Damian Wayne: No.

Bruce Wayne: I won't push, but I think you should talk to someone, even if it isn't me.

Damian Wayne: ...I will think on it. Thank you, Father.

Bruce Wayne: Of course.

---------------------------------
Damian Wayne: *sits alone in his bedroom, gazing at his phone. TT* Fine. Grayson. Come to Gotham, I ... I would like to talk.

---------------------------------

Part Two

Dick Grayson: *Damian, Dick and Titus walk through the manor's grounds*  Damian? We've done three laps of the manor, destroyed every possible listening device. If you're truly not ready to talk, we can keep walking. But it's clear something is bothering you. It might help to get it off your chest. Just blurt it out, like ripping off a band-aid.

Damian Wayne: Band-aids are for children.

Dick Grayson: We've had this argument before and you definitely lost. And if this is an attempt to distract me, it's not going to work.

Damian Wayne: I know Father believes in second chances. I suppose I do as well. But...is it truly possible for a bad person to make up for the harm they have done? To balance the scales somehow?

Dick Grayson: Is this an academic question or about someone in particular? *notices Damian's expression*  Is this about you? Do you think you're a bad person? Bruce said you fought the League of Assassins. Did one of them say something to you? Because Damian, you have to know--

Damian Wayne: I know what I am, Grayson. I know what I have done. I have put pain and fear into this world. I have hurt others with no thought of remorse. I only ask if I can ever make up for it. If what I do now will ever be enough.

Dick Grayson: You were a child when you did those things. You're still a child. It wasn't your fault.

Damian Wayne: I still did them, I must live with that.

Dick Grayson: *they have come to a stop. Dick sits on the grass. Damian hesitates, but joins him* ... You know, we often have this misconception that good people can't do bad things. They can. Because at the end of the day, we're all human, we make mistakes. We choose poorly. We mess up. What really matters is what we do next. Do we double down and keep perpetuating the harm? Or do we learn and grow and take accountability for our actions? You're a hero, Damian. Not because you've been perfect all your life, but because you realized you were hurting others and chose to change. You've got a good heart, Damian, it won't lead you astray.

Damian Wayne: What if it does? What if I mess up again?

Dick Grayson: No one's perfect. We're all going to screw up from time to time. Even me, even Bruce. But when it comes to the big stuff? I'd follow you anywhere, kid. And if that's not enough to convince you, we can go inside and ask Alfred and Bruce the same question. I guarantee you they would say the same thing.

Damian Wayne: You are just trying to placate me.

Dick Grayson: Do you really think we could've been Batman and Robin if I didn't trust you with everything in me?

Damian Wayne: We were a pretty good team.

Dick Grayson: The best.

Damian Wayne: Well, I think you might be a sentimental fool. But thank you, Richard.

Dick Grayson: *Damian offers Dick his hand, pulling him up* Yeah, well, you're the one calling me by my first name, so who's the sentimental fool now?

Damian Wayne: *TT* You are impossible.

Dick Grayson: Thank you.

Damian Wayne: That was not a compliment.

Dick Grayson: Pretty sure it was.
