The Spirit of Edwin Paine - The Sandman

In 1914, Edwin Paine was unwittingly sacrificed in an evocation ritual and dragged to Hell. For the next 75 years, his Spirit was forced to wander through a maze of corridors in constant fear of a malevolent presence that always seemed to be following him. However, when Lucifer abdicated his role as sovereign of Hell and released its residents, Edwin returned to St. Hilarions School for Boys, where he had previously lived.

After witnessing the boys who had murdered him attacking a young student, Charles Rowland, Edwin took pity on the gravely injured boy and carried him to an old, disused attic. There he cared for him the best he could, but unfortunately, he could not save him, and the boy died from infected wounds.

Moved by the boy's bravery - standing up to Death of the Endless - and their unlikely friendship, Edwin left his old body behind and joined Charles in his adventures on the Mortal Plane. Together, they left the school hand in hand, ready to see what the future held next.
