A well-known and feared gang leader in Gotham City, Black Mask, aka Roman Sionis, wields considerable power and influence in the criminal underworld.
When one of his adversaries was incarcerated in Blackgate Prison, he attempted to kill them before they could enter witness protection. However, Batman and his allies stopped this from happening.
Wishing to sabotage one of his competitors, Black Mask tried to shut off the beacon on top of the Cape Carmine Lighthouse, hoping the ship would run aground or crash into the cliffs surrounding Cape Carmine. Taking the lighthouse keeper, Georges, hostage, he was defeated and arrested by the Dark Knight.
