In 1974 he discovered the existence of the Court of Owls and began investigating their operations. Horrified by how entrenched the organisation is within Gotham's spheres of influence, he tried his best to forget what he had learned. However, the Court had other intentions, wishing to silence him and ensure their existence remained as a mere urban legend.
Haunted by the Talon, Roger returned home late one evening, telling Cynthia that they needed to leave Gotham as soon as possible. Once Roger was suitably scared, the assassin murdered both Roger and Cynthia, leaving their son alive and orphaned.
