Now a coerced asset of the meta-human trafficking ring Branchwater, Clayface, aka Matthew Hagen, was forced to impersonate Jervis Tetch, living his life, while the real neuroscientist was operating with impunity, creating more operatives for Simon Stagg's corporate espionage unit.
This trick was uncovered on September 12th when Batman's team, who had been tailing Tetch - on Wayne's orders - as he was on the way to "his" night shift, became suspicious of how much water he was drinking. Discovering clay backwash in an empty bottle he had disposed of, Orphan took it upon herself to attack their target in an alleyway, slicing him in half and forcing Hagen to reveal himself.
With his cover blown, he retreated to a warehouse, inadvertently allowing the young heroes to discover one of Branchwater's Coercion Facilities. After a fight that saw the warehouse destroyed and the Hatter and Shade escape, they managed to secure a sample of the nanotechnology Tetch injected into his victims. With this in their possession, they could free Hagen from Branchwater's control.
